Waiting for a laggy, slow computer to perform a relatively simple task can be quite frustrating for anyone. Many things can cause the slowness of your computer, as a person continues to fill the hard disk with music & movies, create files, surf the web, install extensions and download programs a virtual detritus will build up that will affect the performance of your computer.
You do have to ask yourself, why is my computer running slow?
This guide will help you solve some of the problems and boost the performance
of your pc.
Close background programs
Programs that run in the background usually cause a computer
to run slow. You should disable or remove all start up programs and TSRs that
start running as soon as you boot your computer. Some programs end up consuming
a lot of memory, you can open up the task manager to check their status anytime
and disable the ones that are putting excessive load on the pc.
The Hard Drive is almost full
Your computer can end up losing half of its speed if you
have consumed more than 90 percent of your hard disk. The OS will not have
enough space to store temporary files that it needs to in order to run the
programs properly.
Associated files of uninstalled programs, temporary files
and system updates usually fill up your hard disk drive. However, you should
open up your pc’s control panel and uninstall any program that you do not use
often. Those unnecessary programs may include context menu entries, system
services, auto start entries and background process that might be causing your
system to run slow.
Get in contact with your local pc specialist if this doesn’t improve the
performance of your pc.
Defragmentation
Fragmentation takes place with time as you continue
deleting, making changes or saving files. Sometimes the changes you make in a
file are stored somewhere else, not in the original file. Over the passage of
time, both the volume and file becomes a subject of fragmentation and the pc
starts to slow down because it starts looking at different locations just to
open one file.
Disk defragmenter is a built-in tool in windows OS. The
purpose of this tool is to reunite and rearrange the fragmented data present on
your hard disk. Performing defragmentation can make your computer more
efficient.
Scan for Viruses or Malware
Since when is your computer running slow? Has it slowed down suddenly? If yes, then you may have fallen prey to a virus or malware attack. Presence of malware and viruses can have a severe impact on the performance of your computer. They can tie up your network and bog down your pc. You should clear out your pc of these malicious programs as soon as possible. Make full use of lightweight, free anti-virus programs like Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast or BitDefender. However, the process of removing viruses can prove to be quite difficult. Sometimes, it’s relatively easy to install a new OS than trying to eliminate viruses from pc by tracking them down.
Delete Temp Files
The OS stores temporary files on the hard disk as you
continue running programs on your computer. Deletion of these files can result
in better performance.
You may use Windows Disk Cleanup or Ccleaner to delete these
files and all the other files that you no longer need. However, these tools
might not delete all the unwanted files from your pc; therefore, manual
deletion is considered the safest option for getting rid of these files.
Remove Dust
If you’re opening
up your PC for the first time, you won’t believe how much debris and dust the
cooling fan sucks into the computer. This can clog the airflow that helps in
cooling down the temperature of your system.
You can use a
vacuum cleaner to clean out the dust from the CPU. However, make sure the
computer is not connected to the mains and has not been in use for at-least one
hour. Be careful, while you’re cleaning up your PC, you wouldn’t want to loosen
up some cables in the process.
